Essay papers constitute the biggest number of continuous and informal assessments that students undertake in most institutions of learning. They form the easiest most of assessment that is easy to score and administer, thus making them highly preferable in assessments. Essay papers are virtually written for every course and topic of study and it is not strange to even find essay writing in mathematical courses. An essay paper may take on various forms depending on the manner in which the author wishes to handle the content within the essay. These approaches may be categorized in to various types such as argumentative essays, descriptive essays, illustrative essays, narrative essays and many more differentiated by their handling of the content outlined in the essay. An essay paper usually takes a simple format that is common across the board.
Any essay paper usually starts off with an abstract if the essay paper is lengthy, however; if it’s a brief piece of writing, then there is no need to have an abstract. The abstract is akin to a summary and it gives the outline of the paper in a brief and concise manner that informs the readership of all the content within the various sections of an essay. Any reader that goes through the essay should be able to get a clear picture of what is within the essay by simply reading the abstract. If the essay paper was meant for evaluation of publication, then there is a great need for the writer to lay emphasis on the writing of the abstract with great keenness and caution, because this is what will determine whether the reader will be interested to continue reading your essay or not. If the essay paper’s abstract is not interesting then the reader may never read beyond it.
The second and also important part of the essay paper is the introduction section. This section of the essay paper simply presents and introductory statement of the topic under highlight within the content. The essay’s introduction is should give a clear picture to the reader about what shall be presented within the essay. This section is thereafter followed by the thesis statement which may be a short paragraph consisting of approximately three to five lines. The thesis statement acts like a rudder for the author and it defines the aim of the paper in a brief and concise manner. At times the thesis statement may be included at the end of the introduction instead of writing it separately. The body of the essay follows the introductory part and this outlines the main content of the essay paper in an elaborate manner.
The body of the essay may also have sub-sections divided according to the kind of content that it would wish to cover. This forms the major part of the essay paper. The main body is followed by the conclusion section. The conclusion section of an essay holds the final statements that are conclusively made with regard to how the writer has been able to achieve his goal of communication and the things that s/he has been able to put across. Finally, the essay paper is concluded by a reference or works cited list if the essay paper was written using academic sources. These may not be necessary in a creative writing scenario.
